A Layer Research Topics

____ 1.   Is the weathering of rocks helpful to life on earth?  If so, how?
____ 2.  What are the causes of desertification in Africa?  Is this good or bad for the people that live there?
____ 3.  Are glaciers around the world changing size?  If so, why?
____ 4. Is it a good idea to store nuclear wastes at Yucca Mountain (part of an eroded plateau) in Nevada?   How safe do you think we would be from being exposed to radiation 100 years after burial?
____ 1. Rock Collection- students will collect 10-12 rocks and organize them in a display that should include the rock # in collection, date collected, location, location description, rock description (color, shape, size, grains, bands, etc.), classification (igneous, sedimentary, metamorphic), and identification.
____ 1.   What caused the extinction at the end of the Cretaceous era that killed the dinosaurs and many other   species?
____ 2. What are some pros and cons of using potassium-argon dating to date ancient rocks?
____ 3.    What are some common fossils in one state and what do they tell us about that state's geologic history?
____ 4. Find articles on two recent fossil discoveries.  Write a 3-4 sentence summary on each one for your first 2 paragraphs.  The third paragraph should include your thoughts on the articles and how they relate to what was discussed in class.  Sciencedaily.com is a good website to start at.
